Substrate is working on AI for medicine and biology. We are starting with a practical problem: helping models understand the medical information that already exists, including reports, prescriptions, clinical notes, patient histories, handwriting, and other records. Some of this work will become useful products for clinics, laboratories, physicians, and other healthcare organisations.
Alongside that, we are beginning work on a common way for AI systems to understand medical and laboratory equipment. The early work will stay narrow, controlled, and low risk. Over time, the goal is to give AI a consistent way to understand what a medical tool is, what information it provides, and what it is allowed to do.
The longer plan is to develop our own foundation model for biological and clinical work, designed around medical information, tools, uncertainty, and scientific reasoning from the beginning. We are not trying to solve everything at once. We will begin with smaller problems that can be tested properly, learn from them, and expand from there.
